HISTORY

HISTORY OF AMERICAN FOOTBALL American football developed in the United States during the late 19th century, evolving from a mix of soccer and rugby. The sport’s early rules were chaotic, but Walter Camp , a player and coach at Yale, became known as the “Father of American Football” for introducing key innovations such as the line of scrimmage, the system of downs, and the scoring system. The very first intercollegiate football game took place on November 6, 1869 , between Rutgers and Princeton , with Rutgers winning 6–4 under rules that more closely resembled soccer than modern football. Over the following decades, American football gradually developed its distinct style, with set plays, tackling, and strategic formations becoming central to the game, eventually leading to the professional leagues we know today.
